In a preseason finale marked by impactful special teams performances and dramatic twists, the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers had to play to the last second to decide the outcome in this one. Both teams showcasing both promising moments and areas for improvement.

Quarterback Shuffle and Starter Absences

Gardner Minshew, recently named the Raiders’ QB1, didn’t get the start, along with any other the Raiders starts. I was hoping to see him after a week with the 1s full time, but he’ll have to wait until the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers to fully display his capabilities. In his place, Nathan Peterman took the reins for the first half, while Carter Bradley led the second half offense. The 49ers had their 1s out there for into the second quarter, including Brock Purdy. Joshua Dobbs and later Tanner Mordecai got their chances to shine for the 49ers as well.

First Half Highlights

The 49ers, with their starters on the field, immediately made their presence felt. Brock Purdy connected with Deebo Samuel and George Kittle on impressive plays, although a timely challenge by Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce and a tip by Charles Snowden managed to limit the 49ers to a field goal on their opening drive. The Raiders couldn’t stop the run on ensuing drives though, that’s been their downfall all preseason, even with the starters.

Peterman’s performance was uneven. He struggled against a strong 49ers defens but eventually orchestrated a solid two-minute drill, capping it with a touchdown pass to Kristian Wilkerson. Despite the Raiders’ struggles, they showed some defensive promise with key sacks from Snowden and Matthew Butler.

Second Half Surge

As the second half began, Carter Bradley injected energy into the Raiders’ offense, showcasing sharp passing and effective play-action. He found Tyreik McCallister for a touchdown, sparking hope for the Raiders’ offensive future. Sincere McCormick had a very impressive drive and half to put on tape and try to earn a spot somewhere in the league, if the Raiders don’t keep him around. Most impressively, 2 key blocks on back to back plays, with the second leading to the aforementioned touchdown pass to McCallister.

Tyreek McCallister with the insane adjustment

The game saw a rollercoaster of special teams plays, including a remarkable 81-yard punt return touchdown by McCallister and a subsequent 92-yard return by the 49ers’ Issac Guerendo, which set up another San Francisco score. Despite some sloppy special teams coverage, the Raiders managed to stay competitive.

Bradley’s performance continued to impress as he led a drive that ended with a 43-yard field goal from Daniel Carlson to tie the game. However, he did end one drive with an interception at the goalline, though he was otherwise serviceable, showcasing why he might be in the conversation for the 3rd string QB job.

Closing Moments

The 49ers’ late-game efforts, led by Tanner Mordecai, were highlighted by a dramatic final drive that ended with a tipped Hail Mary pass that was completed and turned into what felt like at like 30 seconds of fumblerooski football to conclude the final play of the 2024 NFL preseason. The game concluded with a 24-24 tie, with overtime no longer happening in the preseason.

Final Stats:

  • Nathan Peterman: 12/19, 108 yards, 1 TD
  • Carter Bradley: 9/21, 169 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Final Score: Las Vegas Raiders 24, San Francisco 49ers 24

As both teams wrap up their preseason campaigns, they head into the regular season with plenty to build on. The Raiders will look to refine they run defense and special teams play, while the 49ers will aim to maintain their strong defensive presence while utilizing their arsenal of offensive weapons. The stage is set for an exciting regular season ahead!

Quote of the week

“People ask me what I do in the summer when there’s no football. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for fall.”
