The Hawkeyes started the year off with a dominating win after, course, the best tradition in all of sports.
The Hawkeyes started the game slow, they were up 6-0 early after 2 field goals in the first half, but came out on fire in the second half and just kept piling on to their lead.
They came out hot in the second half and proceeded to drop a 40 ball on Illinois St.
It’s safe to say this appears to be a new philosophy on football by longtime Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz, and Iowa fans are EXCITED about it. Iowa scored more points than they have in a game since 2019, and they won the game 40-0 after a slow start.
The Cyclones also started the season off HOT, taking just 30 seconds to score their first TD of the season. Their QB threw 2 beautiful passes and gave them a quick 7-0 lead over North Dakota.
Iowa State’s offense and defense were both good, not great, for much of the first quarter. They exchanged punts before North Dakota was finally able to put together a drive in which they went 6/6 on 3rd down, using up much of the 2nd quarter game clock, on their way to kicking a field goal and making the game 7-3.
North Dakota kicked the ensuing kickoff out of bounds, so ISU would start with great field position and 3:00 minutes left to score before halftime. Iowa State was able to capitalize as Rocco Becht threw his second TD in the game, and it only took 2:12, proving ISU has the ability to score fast.
ISU’s defense once again showed they had some holes and allowed North Dakota to get some yardage, but stopped them from scoring points and went into the half up 14-3. ISU got the ball for the first time with 11:00 minutes in the 3rd quarter, after a big interception by the defense. They went nowhere fast, and punted the ball back to NDU.
Iowa State had the ball with time dwindling down in the third quarter. Rocco Becht showed his experience and looked in command as he made good reads and accurate throws to move the ball down the field and drain down the clock.
Rocco Becht had one of the most beautiful touchdown passes of the day called back after a stupid offensive penalty. Becht said no big deal and continued to move methodically down the field, completing quality passes before running in his first rushing TD of the day.
Iowa State ended up winning the game 21-3, but I can guarantee it will not be so easy next week against Iowa. The rivalry lives on, it has been a low scoring game recently between these two, but after the new offense first philosophies they both exhibited today, it could be a high scoring affair.
Who do you think will win on Sept 7 at Kinnick Stadium?
